New Instagram Leak Reveals Copy Of Rival App’s Main Feature Now Under Test

Instagram tests a brand new photo feature. It appears almost exactly like a popular app for photo editing.

According to leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is experimenting with a new feature called ‘IG Candid Challenges’, where users are prompted at a different time each day to capture and share a photo within two minutes. The challenge will allow users to share their images with others.

Paluzzi says that IG Candid Challenges employ a dual-camera system where front and rear cameras are simultaneously activated. The result is a photograph of Paluzzi along with their image.

Paluzzi posted his findings to Twitter and included screenshots of the still-unreleased feature. This has been verified. Engadget as an ‘internal prototype.’

If any of this looks familiar, it’s because IG Candid Challenges bears more than a passing resemblance to the popular new app, BeReal.

Each sends daily reminders to remind users to snap images in a 2-minute time frame. Both cameras can simultaneously capture images from the front and back. However, BeReal additionally bans the use of photo filters or image editing, while it’s unknown whether IG Candid Challenges would do the same.

BeReal, which is described as an innovative and new way to find out who your friends are every day in their lives, currently ranks No.1 in the iOS App Store. Instagram currently sits at No.8. It is not surprising that they are preparing a response.

While the current IG Candid Challenges prototype appears to be incredibly similar to BeReal, it’s important to remember that it’s currently meant only for internal testing and may eventually appear in a somewhat different form — assuming it is released at all.

BeReal’s purpose is to counter the influencer-centric, highly edited world of social media. Instagram would have to take its core functionality. However, even if this were to happen, simply adding IG Candid Challenges to the mix wouldn’t provide users with the escape from Instagram that users appear to want — away from follower counts, filters, influencers and recommended posts from strangers.

You can achieve this only by switching to another app.
