Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, 98, died on Sunday. In February, the former Republican senator of Kansas said that he was currently being treated for stage four lung cancer. Elizabeth Dole (85), a former Republican senator of North Carolina, is his widow.

His death at the age of 98 was his third in a series of 79-year stints of faithful service to America. Sen. Dole was an American World War II veteran who sustained serious wounds while fighting in Italy. He was injured when a German bullet struck his upper back, right arm and collarbone. These injuries caused him to have limited mobility in his right hand and left arm as well as numbness.

Dole became a politician after the war and served for 27 years, including two terms as Senator for Kansas. Dole is most famous for the unsuccessful 1996 campaign against President Bill Clinton, which was his third attempt to win the White House. In 1976, after Vice President Nelson Rockefeller had declined to run for the presidency in 1976 and Gerald Ford elected him as his running mate.

On Sunday there was a remarkable display of unity among a divided country. There was a flood of praise from both sides for Senator Dole. Many had nothing negative to say about this man, who dedicated his entire life to public service.

Rep. Jim Banks, R-Indiana (@RepJimBanks), praised Sen. Dole and wrote, “RIP Sen. Bob Dole, Majority Leader and proud member of the greatest generation. “Thank you so much for all your sacrifices to serve our country.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D.Calif.), (@SenFeinstein), was one of many who served with Dole in Congress to take a moment and honor him by writing: “Bob Dole dedicated all his life to the country. He first served in World War II, then represented Kansas in Congress for 35 years. It was an honorable person and his memory will be felt. “My thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth Dole and her family.”

Bob Dole was an outstanding leader and a man full of wisdom and patience. He was a great leader and I shared many memorable moments with him. My deepest sympathies to his family, especially Elizabeth,” stated John Kasich, former Republican Governor of Ohio (@JohnKasich).

Al Franken, former Democratic Minnesota Senator (@alfranken), tweeted: “Bob Dole died today. His legacy will bring blessings to his loved ones and the country where he served. He was a war hero, one of the great senators, a lovely man, and…well, I’m finally the funniest former US senator. This truly funny man will be missed.”

He was results driven—always willing to cross the aisle to find a principled comprise. I am thinking of Elizabeth and his whole family at this difficult time,” said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Delaware (@SenatorCarper).

Democratic House Majority Whip Rep. James E. Clyburn of South Carolina (@WhipClyburn) wrote, “I am saddened to learn of Bob Dole’s passing. A true statesman, he served his country well for over 79 decades. His dedication and character to American ideals was admirable. We have lost one of our great heroes.”

Chris Lu (@ChrisLu44), former Obama White House cabinet secretary, wrote about a trip he made with senator Bob Dole. He said, “In June 2009 we traveled to Normandy together with a presidential delegation for the 65th Anniversary of D-Day. Bob Dole was our honored guest. A kind-hearted and gracious man, Bob Dole spoke to as many WWII veterans that he could, often asking for their stories. An authentic hero, and a statesman. #RIP”

Official Twitter account of the American Association of People with Disabilities (@AADP), marked Senator Bob Dole’s death. “Senator Bob Dole wasn’t only a champion of disability rights but was also a founding member of our organization. Our community will feel the loss of Senator Dole, but his legacy will live on. Thank you, Senator Dole.”

It is clear that even people who don’t agree with Sen. Dole could work together to mourn his death. This should be a sign that maybe our division is not as large as we might think.
