There’s no doubt that a career as a pilot is one of the most attractive ones out there. Just think — jet setting to a different location every week and flying the world’s most technologically-advanced aircraft (and you get paid to do it!).

The first step to becoming a pilot, however, is attending a reputable flight school. There are quite a few options out there, so picking the right one for you isn’t no easy task.

To help you with the process of choosing the right flight school, we’ve created a quick-start guide with a few crucial tips.

Look at Reputation

One of the most important factors when it comes to the quality of a flight school is its reputation. Just like with any other schooling program, the more reputable your flight school is, the better chance you stand of getting positive responses when it comes time to graduate flight school and apply for pilot positions in the industry.

Thus, reputation should be your #1 criteria. Check out websites like USNews that rank educational institutions. Apply to the top flight schools and build out your candidate profile to be worthy of a spot at the institution. Don’t settle for less.

Network With Alumni

One great way to choose your flight school is to talk to alumni about it. Reach out to any alumni who you know personally or through mutual connections to discuss their experience at the school. Find out what they loved about the school, what they hated about it, and if they would have done anything differently if they could do it all over again.

Not only is this a great way to get the inside scoop on a flight school, but chances are that the alumni you know will be high up in their respective airlines. If you give a good first impression, you could easily leverage them as a referral when you apply to those airlines down the road.

If you don’t know anyone that graduated from the schools you’re looking into and if your friends and family don’t have any direct connections either, don’t worry. You can try using LinkedIn to see the alumni from a specific school and then leverage the basic elements of communication to reach out to them, like a cold email.

Many alumni will look very positively at someone who is so proactive about their career and will be more than happy to jump on a phone call.

Talk to the Career Department

Last but not least, talk to the flight school’s career department. At the end of the day, the reason why you go to flight school is to get a job. If your flight school can’t help with on-campus placement and job fairs, then forget it. They won’t get the job done and help you reach the ultimate goal of being paid to fly.
